The Small Bites Series: Inner-block Development - The Next Frontier of American Urbanism

Introducing, Small Bites.

Small Bites is our newest virtual training series delivering relevant and valuable tools on the implementation of small-scale development. Sessions will range from an hour to an hour and a half in length. Led by our diverse faculty, they’ll offer expertise drawn from real-life experiences. These sessions are for people of all skill levels, from small-scale developers and local advocates, to policymakers. An opportunity to ask questions is included at the end of each secession. Check out our small bites below!

Inner-block Development - The Next Frontier of American Urbanism

‘What are the three most important things about real-estate value? Location, Location, Location.’ In this session, we will explore the design principles behind the most photographed residential streets in America - the highest valued retail real estate in Palm Beach, and learn that the design principles of these inner-block urban spaces are primed for incremental developers.

Changing Demographics, Incremental Developers and New ADU legislation are opening the door to developing the residential alley and the inner block for the first time in a century. The inner block—which for traditional towns and cities is full of human-scaled courts, passages, narrow streets lined with even narrower townhouses, and more—is finally being noticed in the United States. The first half of this session will introduce the inner-block as an urban type and will analyze historic examples as well as recent developments. Based on this analysis, the second half of the session will explore design strategies for incrementally scaled infill development.
